Torsten Sattler, an ELLIS Scholar and researcher affiliated with ELLIS Prague, has been recognized as part of the team awarded the prestigious CVPR 2024 Best Student Paper Award. The paper, titled Mip-Splatting: Alias-free 3D Gaussian Splatting and co-authored by Zehao Yu, Anpei Chen, Binbin Huang, Andreas Geiger, and Sattler himself, was presented at the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2024, one of the premier global conferences in computer vision.

The paper was selected as one of the top 10 best papers from over 11,500 submissions to the conference, which took place in June 2024 in Seattle, USA. CVPR is renowned for showcasing groundbreaking research in computer vision, AI, machine learning, and related fields, drawing over 12,000 attendees this year.

The awarded paper focuses on enhancing 3D Gaussian Splatting, a cutting-edge technique for creating photo-realistic 3D models from images. The proposed „Mip-Splatting“ method introduces innovations that allow for alias-free rendering of scenes from a wider range of viewpoints, outperforming existing methods in out-of-distribution scenarios such as novel camera positions and zoom factors. These advances hold promising implications for industries such as augmented reality and virtual reality, where realistic 3D scene rendering is crucial.

Reflecting on the recognition, Torsten Sattler shared: “I feel very lucky to be part of this work. Receiving awards at CVPR is a rare honor, and I am especially proud of Zehao Yu, the PhD student who is the lead author of the paper. It’s thrilling to see our work so well-received.”

Sattler, who holds a RICAIP Tenure Track Position at CIIRC CTU and is a key figure in the Applied Algebra and Geometry Group at the Robotics and Machine Perception department, has a distinguished background in 3D computer vision. His research primarily focuses on 3D reconstruction and visual localization.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Torsten Sattler and his co-authors for this outstanding achievement and look forward to their continued contributions to the field.
